BAT EATERS AND OTHER NAMES FOR CORE ZANG π§
MUG: Autumn Flower Tumbler
BOOK: Bat Eaters and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker
DRINK: Bourbon on the Rocks
HORROR. This is a horror book. Now that the warning is out there I will also say this is a very good book. The author really targets the racism that Chinese Americans (and most Asian Americans as we love to generalize race in the USA) faced during the pandemic. The book is set in New York City in the heat of the pandemic. We first meet Cora on a subway platform where she watches helplessly as someone pushes her sister in front of an on coming train and calls Cora a bat eater. The storyline weaves in Chinese lore of the Hungry Ghost Festival as Cora, working as a crime scene cleaner, realizes someone is targeting Asian women in horrendous murders. Keeping with the darker mood of the book letβs pair this one with an Autumn Flower Tumbler and bourbon on the rocks.
