I found this book on a recommendation from a bookstore employee in Canada and then ended up reading it in New Zealand. It was a perfect vacation read. Well written magical realism. The book is set in Nova Scotia in 1832, a young woman living on her own is the midwife for a small costal town. She has worked hard to help young mothers in town but fights a reputation imposed on to her. She is awoken late one night to cries in her yard and finds a woman near birth in her yard. The story unfolds and Jane, the midwife, is put in a position to either ignore or put herself in harms way to help this new young mother. The book is a retelling of the Cetlic folktale of the Selkie Wife and touches on issues that women still face today. I would pair this book with a Garden Full Bloom mug and a cup of Chamomile Tea perhaps collected from your own garden.
