ALIAS GRACE
MUG: Wildflower Beer Stein
BOOK: Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
DRINK: Lager
Set in the 1800s, Atwood works her literary magic around a true story of a young maid and handyman murdering their employer and his mistress. The story follows Grace Marks and her life leading up to the murders that have left her in prison. She is being interviewed by a Doctor who is studying the up and coming field of mental illness. He has working with Grace to see if she is truly mentally ill and if she did indeed murder her employers. With Atwood’s unflinching ability to lay out the roles of men and women in the 1800s you will be left feeling very uncomfortable and continually aghast at how the world treated women. And in turn how women have to scrap for any kind of control in a patriarchal society. I’d pair this book with a Wildflower Beer Stein topped off with a light lager because in the 1840s drinking beer was typically safer than drinking water.
