Oh goodness THIS BOOK. It was recommended from a friend who read it in high school and it was a part of her queer awakening. Which just makes me heart hurt for so many queer folks searching for representation in the 90s and earlier. This book is a brutal take of life on a small island off the coast of Nova Scotia in the early 1900s. The story is mainly written from the perspective of a family with 4 girls. Racism and sexism are rampant in the story line and the tragedies that befall these girls are gut wrenching. Go in warned that this is not an easy read but it is beautifully written and has seen that are heart warming despite the traumas. I’d pair this one with an I <3 Books because it never ceases to amaze me how impactful books can be and fill it up with a delicious ginger beer which makes an appearance in the book.
